Anglo-Burmese War

 

            In the 19th century Burma was the free country. But gradually it become parts of British in 1885 by the expansionist policy of British India. In this proses of annexation of Burma resulted in three Anglo-Burmese Wars.

 

First Burma War (1824-26)

                                           First Burma War was occurred when Burma capture Arakan, Manipur and it create direct threat to British India led to continuous friction with Burma. But in May 1824, The British forces occupied Rangoon and enter within 72 km of the capital at Ava.

                 The First Burma War ended with Treaty of Yandabo in 1826. By this treaty Burma paid one crore rupees as war compensation and give coastal city Arakan and Tenasserim to British India.

 

Second Burma War (1852)  

                                                                      At the time of Lord Dalhousie, The British merchants were keen to get hold of timber resources of upper Burma which leads to Second Burma War in 1852. And British capture Pegu.

 

Third Burma War (1885)  

                                                        In Burma Thibaw, son of King Bhindan were succeeded to the throne, who was very hostile towards the British and also creating a relation with France, Germany and Italy. Which trigger a conflict with British India. At last by the order of Lord Dufferin, then Governor General of India to invade Burma and broke a Guerrilla war. But al last British India capture whole of Burma in between 1885.

               (Burma was separated from India in 1935. The Burmese nationalist movement further intensified under U Aung San during the Second World War, which finally led to the independence of Burma on January 4, 1948. )
